Club and Coach Education

Coach Education, Recruitment and Development

In the past, the provision of education and training opportunities, and the development of coaches across the West Yorkshire Sports Partnership has generally been managed through a single West Yorkshire Sports Partnership Coach Development Group (CDG), with administration support and guidance being provided by West Yorkshire Sport officers and the SCUK Regional Coach Development Officer.

This arrangement was reviewed at the last Coach Development Group meeting and a number of key concerns were identified:

  • The current Coach Development Strategy is outdated
  • The Coach Development Strategy 'audience' (ie; coaches, officials, volunteers, facility staff, professional sport development staff) is too broad and needs to be clearer and more focussed
  • The coach education and development process needs to be separated and managed under two distinct areas;

    a) the attraction and recruitment of people into the formal coach education, training and qualification process, and

    b) the ongoing development and management of coaches once they are in the system.
  • West Yorkshire Sport could act as a central point of information for all coach education course provision (additional details to be attached).

To address these issues, West Yorkshire Sport officers will enable the Partnership to:

  • Identify appropriate representatives and arrange group meetings to take the two distinct coach development strands forward (as outlined in point 3 above)
  • Draft terms of reference for the two groups.
  • Review and update the Coach Development Strategy through the two groups.
  • Ensure the Strategy remains focussed on an appropriate audience (ie; sports coaches - please note that other groups will be set up under a Workforce Development framework to manage other sectors - ie; sports club administrators, sports facility staff, education sector staff, professional Sport Development officers and so on).
  • Produce guidelines for the collection and co-ordination of all sports-specific and generic coach education course provision.

Further information / procedures will be produced and circulated shortly to deliver this important area of work.
