Step into Sport
What is Step into Sport?
Step into Sport is a leadership and volunteering project. The main aim is to coordinate more opportunities at a local level for young people and adults to become involved in leadership and volunteering through sport in their community.
Step into Sport concentrates on training a new generation of volunteers, mostly aged between 14 and 19, but also the over 50s.
Step into Sport builds on existing structures and programmes such as Junior Sports Leaders Award and Community Sports Leaders Award (CSLA) to encourage greater volunteer links between schools and clubs.
How will Step into Sport help West Yorkshire?
Step into Sport will help to establish and ensure communication and sustainable links between school partnerships and local clubs.
West Yorkshire Sport will provide assistance finding and ensuring suitable and quality volunteering opportunities. This will be achieved through clubs meeting minimum operating standards and by matching the skills and interests of volunteers with vacancies.
Step into Sport aims to identify a Volunteer Coordinator in each club, to oversee recruitment training and retention of volunteers in the club.
The number and quality of coaches, officials and administrators working in local clubs will increase to help achieve their minimum operating standards and Clubmark recognition.
The programme supports the appointment and development of a new network of volunteer coordinators. It will provide access to a new network of volunteers with an interest and commitment to sport, and their local community.
What support is offered?
Support is given by the British Sports Trust, Sport England and the Youth Sport Trust along with West Yorkshire Sports and School Sport Partnership by providing training and support to the volunteers whilst deploying them with appropriate clubs.
The British Sports trust provides a free training for teachers (for schools enrolled on the Step into Sport Programme) who would like to become a CSLA tutor.
West Yorkshire Sport provides a funding grant to support clubs involved in the programme and to provide training and support for volunteer coordinators.
West Yorkshire Sport is providing a Club Link Officer to support clubs through the process. Clubs will receive a volunteer support pack to make it easier to recruit, retain and make the most of volunteers by providing them with quality volunteering opportunities.
Step Into Sport Conference
Every year WYS organise a conference for twenty promising sports leaders from our 18 family schools.
