The Wakefield Community Sports Network

Here in Wakefield sport is an important part of our culture.  Those who value sport do so because they know that it makes a difference both to the quality of life of individuals and to the communities in which we live.

The Wakefield Community Sports Network (CSN) exists to bring together and achieve a common purpose amongst all agencies which are responsible for providing and developing opportunities in sport and active recreation.

It has formal links with the West Yorkshire County Sports Partnership and is recognised as part of the ‘single system for sport.’  Its mission is to develop and support the Sport and Active Recreation network in the Wakefield District.

The CSN is a network not a committee, neither is it owned or controlled by any single organisation. All those involved in the CSN remain independent but collectively aim to:

• Raise participation levels within sport and active recreation by 1.5% year on year (currently 18% in Wakefield)
• Increase number of all school children accessing 2 hours quality PE and Sport in and outside of the curriculum (currently 70% in Wakefield)
• Ensure that Wakefield is well represented in England and Great Britain Teams (a 10% target of Yorkshire Athletes has been set).
• Bring together and align partner priorities and targets within one joined up delivery/strategic plan based on the needs of local communities
• Widen access to opportunities for sport and active recreation

The CSN will seek to achieve its aims by:

• Acting as the local voice for sport and active recreation
• Supporting and assisting in the creation and development of sporting pathways for people to achieve their full potential
• Increase the infrastructure capacity of the local professional and voluntary sector, both paid and unpaid.
• Coordinating the engagement and integration of sport in order to support the achievement of the outcomes of Local Area Agreement (LAA)
• Support the achievement of Performance Indicators (measures of success) as part of the Local Authority Improvement Agenda and the Single System for Sport including PESSCL targets
• Successfully co-ordinate opportunities for sport and active recreation in the local population by providing leadership and strategic direction
• Effectively inform, monitor and assess Sport England investments made via West Yorkshire Sport

It is planned that the full network will meet two or three times a year.  The key reference document for the Wakefield Community Sports Network is the Wakefield District Sport and Active Lifestyles Strategy.

In order to both inform the wider network and progress issues raised in the Sport and Active Lifestyles Strategy a number of sub groups are planned either on an on going or task and finish basis.

These are currently:
• School Sports
 (i) PE and Sport in the Curriculum – Activemark
 (ii) School to Community Links
• Club development – clubmark etc links with governing bodies
• Workforce development – coaches, games’ officials, club officials, general volunteers
• Performance enhancement – player pathways – ‘start, stay, succeed’
• Physical Activity/Active Lifestyles
• Facility
• (i) Planning of major facilities, brief developments
(ii) Updating/improving existing facilities e.g. playing fields
(iii) Management – programming, QUEST etc
• Investment including the Community Investment Fund

There is still scope for representatives from the sports groups being developed – cricket, rugby league, football, bowls etc.  Also area representation and also specifics such as disability, old age.
