Disability Sport

The structure for disability for sport in West Yorkshire is going through some exiting changes.  The Federation of Disability Sports Organisations (FDSO) is currently working with consultants (the Stimpson partnership), Sport England and the four County Sports Partnerships in Yorkshire in order to develop a funding bid to develop and strengthen the structure in the region.

A draft Yorkshire Disability Plan has been written along with four sub regional Disability Plans to consolidate the work that will be undertaken in West Yorkshire 2008 – 2011.  The current draft of the West Yorkshire Disability Plan can be viewed here

A West Yorkshire Work Programme is up and running and can be viewed here

West Yorkshire Sport will host the West Yorkshire Disability Officer, and will be managed by FDSO.  The officer will have the benefit of working closely within the West Yorkshire Sports partnership network, will look at disability across the board and lead on the Playground to Podium Framework for the sub region.

The Federation of Disability Sports Organisation (FDSO)

The Federation of Disability Sports Organisations (FDSO) was formed in 1993 to create and provide sport and recreational opportunities for people with disabilities in the Yorkshire and Humberside regions.

FDSO work at a strategic level across Yorkshire and Humber to provide and support the development of all aspects of physical recreation for and by children and adults with disabilities.  The FDSO strives to:

• Work towards the integration of disabled children and adults in mainstream community provision.
• Empower and enable children and adults with disabilities to take up positions of responsibility in sport.
• Work with and through local communities and community provision in order to enhance their capacity to integrate people with disabilities into physical recreation.
• Assist partners to enhance the capacity of statutory providers.

Playground to Podium

The program looks at a Performance Pathway for Disabled athletes to the London 2012 Games. Research has found that not enough athletes are coming up from local or regional based competitions to engage with performance environments, clubs and squads. Also a significant level of adults who come into disability late in life, are not being provided with information that would enable them to participate in sport.

Following national consultation with a wide range of partners and a review of existing programmes and initiatives, a framework has been developed to enhance existing player pathways and provide increased opportunities in sport for disabled participants.

The Framework incorporates pathways for disability sport from Schools (schools sports partnerships and specialist schools) led by Youth Sport Trust and the Community (after schools clubs, Higher Education & Further Education and adult identification through health related networks) led by Sport England through the County Sports Partnerships.

Linking into this framework are the player / performance pathways from National Governing Bodies of sport, providing performance environments and high quality coaching for identified talented participants to enter County, Regional and National squads through the National Competition Framework delivered in conjunction with UK Sport.
