World records broken at Disability Sport Events Short Course

Fifteen World and thirty European records were smashed at the Ponds Forge event supported by Nationwide Building Society Sam Hynd and Heather Frederkisen won the best Male and Female Trophies.

English Federation of Disability Sport (EFDS) is the national body responsible for developing sport for disabled people in England. We work closely with the six National Disability Sports Organisations (NDSOs) recognised by Sport England to develop sporting opportunities for the 11 million disabled people in England:

› Burleigh Inclusive multi sport club achieves Clubmark
Andy Reed

Andy Reed M.P, Chairman of Leicester-Shire and Rutland Sport congratulated Burleigh Inclusive multi sport club for being the first disability club in England to attain Clubmark. Burleigh Inclusive Multi Sports Club offers young disabled people aged 8 to 19 the opportunity to participate, and receive quality coaching in a variety of multi-sport activities. The club has been operating for the last five years and has increased both its membership and the number of sports it offers.

› England Wheelchair Rugby League win the World Cup

England Wheelchair Rugby League have been crowned World Champions after defeating hosts Australia 44-12 in the Wheelchair Rugby League World Cup Final on Monday 17th November at Mount Druitt, Sydney. England Captain and Wigan star Martin Norris lifted the World Cup trophy following an excellent man of the match performance in what was a thoroughly professional display from England.

› Short listed nominees announced for IFI Awards 2008
IFI Gym

The Inclusive Fitness Initiative (IFI) has short short listed facilities for the IFI Awards 2008. The overall winners in the eight categories will be announced on Wednesday 10th December 2008 at the ICC, Birmingham. The event, sponsored by Cybex will recognise and reward IFI accredited facilities for outstanding achievement in developing inclusive physical activity opportunities.

Wheelchair Basketball
› Maidstone Rebels Wheelchair Basketball Sat 6th Sep 2008 to Sat 20th Dec 2008

The club is primarily for wheelchair users with upper body co-ordination, but non disabled players are welcome. Sessions run between 3pm - 5pm every Saturday. The club will be joining the Great Britain Basketball Association League and participate competitively

› Sports leadership programmes for disabled people Wed 5th Nov 2008 to Wed 31st Dec 2008

If you are unemployed, aged 19 or over you can develop your skills and gain a level two certificate in sports leadership. The Coachability programme is a five day Level 2 Sports Leadership Course followed by a First Aid and a Level 1 or 2 in your chosen sport.

› England Blind Squad launch Hampshire VI Cricket Academy ahead of Ashes Tour Sat 22nd Nov 2008

The England Blind Squad will take time out from their Ashes tour preparations to launch the Hampshire Visually Impaired CC. Adults and children are welcome and sessions are free of charge. The EFDS Advocacy and Activity Buddy Scheme has completed two training resources and a volunteer workshop for sport and physical activity sites wishing to develop a volunteer scheme to support their disabled members or participants.
