Free sports activities in sports centres

Youngsters aged 8 -16 years will be able to try a range of different sports for free in the launch of Kirklees Council’s new three year programme of free activities.  The programme will be managed and delivered by Kirklees Active Leisure throughout their eleven sports centres in Kirklees.

The programme launches with weekly archery taster sessions on Saturdays at Dewsbury Sports Centre from 2 August until 30 August from 12.45- 2.15 pm and sports activity sessions at Huddersfield Sports Centre on Tuesdays from 5 August until 26 August from 4.00-5.00 pm.

Leaders will use these taster sessions to find out more about the kinds of activities youngsters would like to take part in. More free sessions are planned later in the year at other sports centres across Kirklees as the project develops.

Cllr Liz Smaje, Cabinet member for Leisure and Neighbourhood Communities, said, ”We hope that these free sessions will encourage youngsters who wouldn’t usually come to the sports centre to come along and try out various activities and find out more about the many different sports activities on offer.”

The three year programme will also include subsidised sports coaching sessions designed to improve sporting performance and encourage young people to continue their involvement in sports activities in existing sports clubs and ongoing sports session at Kirklees Active Leisure sports centres. These sessions will also provide an opportunity for older participants to assist with coaching with the possibility of gaining a recognised qualification.

No booking is required for the free weekly multi-sports taster sessions. For further information please contact Gareth Watson, Sports Development Officer, Kirklees Active Leisure 01484 234127 or 07815 498670
