Commenting on this great success the First XV Coach and Director of Rugby, Chris Willett, has said,
“Reaching a Twickenham Final is a magnificent achievement for the players and the whole club. It puts us right up in the spotlight and reflects the hard work that has gone into this season on and off the field. We want to enjoy and take in the whole atmosphere of the day but ensure that we make the most of the opportunities for the attraction of new players and members not only for the Senior teams but right through all the Junior teams to the Under 7’s Tag Rugby team. The future of this club is built on accomplishments like this and they will help build a broad base to bring players through in years to come. Just think of a player starting out in the Under 7s and thinking one day ‘I could play at Twickenham’. This gives me as much a tingle down the spine as the thrill of playing there myself”.
The club has embarked up a COME ON CAS publicity campaign and the noticeable “splat badge” that will be used on the run up to the Final was designed by Alexander Ball, 13, who also designed and assists in the maintenance of the club’s 2 websites. Alexander said “I did not go to the Semi Final at Tewkesbury but I saw the photographs of the mud splattered players and I thought the logo had to reflect this.”
Some more interesting facts about the players:
This will be the second time that Castleford centre, Daniel Price will have visited the English Capital of Rugby to play centre stage in an important game even though the codes and thus the actual venue was different. The first occasion was twenty years ago when as a fresh faced ten year old he played in the centre for Castleford Schools against Wigan Schoolboys in the curtain raiser at Wembley before the 1989 Rugby League Challenge Cup Final when Wigan beat St Helens.
Paul Connell has been a home grown player of merit and one of the few to come all the way through the junior ranks. He played in the minis from 1978 to 1983. He also played for Yorkshire schoolboys at U16 level and Yorkshire Colts and started in the first team at Cas as a 17 year old.
