Event Organisers - Do YOU need a Sporting Champion?
With schools breaking up shortly, we are sure there are lots of summer activities that a Sporting Champion could attend to help increase participation in your area.
Please let us at West Yorkshire Sport know of any upcoming events and we can nominate your event. All community and schools nominations must come via your County Sports Partnership.
In terms of benefits, a Sporting Champions visit will:

Raise awareness of sport and the benefits of physical activity

Engage and enthuse young people

Increase the profile of a variety of sports and local sports clubs

Improve behaviour in the local community
-
Motivate young people in their wider lives
-
Raise the profile of a particular event
Sporting Champions Guidelinee, the visit must
-
be a community visit or school visits however for the latter the emphasis should remain on community sport and not curriculum PE. The key message is school and club links with a view to increasing participation outside of school.

be linked to on-going plans to increase participation amongst young people in community sport.

encourage/trigger long-term sports development opportunities.
What will each Sporting Champion deliver?
It is essential that Champions are fully integrated into the event and that they are involved in meaningful, structured activity at all times. Please keep Champion's "mingling" (both with VIPs and young people) to a minimum.
Motivational talk based on the Champion's own experience and directly related to the key theme of the event.
Question and answer session with the young people.
Practical element e.g. workshops, demonstrations, coaching sessions.
All visits should include at least one of the above core elements.
Key Messages - Each visit should be linked to at least one of the following key themes:

Increasing participation in community sport

Club and school links
-
Leadership and volunteering
The visit theme you choose will add structure, value and meaning to your event. The Champions have all received training around these themes and can reinforce the importance of the messages to your audience. Please note we do not support awards ceremonies.
So, what next?
Get your thinking caps on as to the potential beneficiaries of visits. Contact Sarah Zagni of West Yorkshire Sport to register your request. Your request will then by nominated by West Yorkshire Sport to Sporting Champions. If the nomination is successful Sporting Champions will liaise with your event organiser with regard to the specific details.
