The Garry Chappelow Memorial Fund raises money for junior sports teams and individuals, the volunteer committee work hard to raise money to help keep kids off the streets by taking part in sport.
Children’s Day held at Roundhay Park Leeds ran from 1922 until 1963, it was one of the biggest festivals of youth staged anywhere in Britain, and it attracted 100,000 people some years. Pupils from just about every school in Leeds congregated in Roundhay Park for dancing, displays and sport.
Although this Children’s Day cannot be on the same scale as those held at Roundhay Park; however the organizers, the Garry Chappelow Memorial Fund with the Leeds Rugby Foundation, want the day to provide children, young people and their families with a fun, interesting and positive day out, where they can take part in a variety of sport and activities.
Garry Chappelow was tragically killed, at the age of 59, in a traffic accident in 2002; Garry’s funeral was attended by over 800 people as he was a fantastic guy. Over £1200 was collected at his funeral and the priest suggested that a fund be set up in his name, so the Garry Chappelow Memorial Fund was formed.
A hard working volunteer fundraising committee of eight organize three events a year, which include a Sportsman Dinner a Valentines Dance and a fun night at a local club. All the events are well attended and help raise much needed funds. A new fund raising day will take place this August when the Garry Chappelow Memorial Fund in partnership with the Leeds Rugby Foundation are to hold a Children’s Day event at the Headingley Carnegie Stadium, we expect over 5000 children and their parents to attend the event which promises to be a fun filled day.
"We donate money to junior amateur sports teams and individuals. We receive written applications requesting funds for things like new kit, new equipment, and various other things. We have to date raised a staggering £60,000 and donated in the region of £50,000 to amateur junior sports teams and individuals. The fund is well supported by a handful of local firms as well as generous friends. We need more help in getting the fund to become a household name so that people will know about us and the good work that the Garry Chappelow Memorial Fund do in helping to keep kids of the streets by taking part in sport."
Donations they have made include: - Boxing clubs, Rugby, football, Cricket teams. Cheerleaders, Karate clubs, Gymnastics, Martial Arts, Dance groups and tennis players... each application received requesting funding is discussed by the committee and a maximum of £500 can be granted.
