Route 66 cross-boundary cycle ride on 8 December

Kirklees and Bradford Councils are leading promotional bike rides on the National Cycle Network Route between Huddersfield town and Bradford city centres starting at 10am on Saturday December 8. The distance is 20 miles each way and participants may choose the train to return.

Kirklees cycling cabinet member is inviting people to join him and his counterparts in Bradford Council on a cross-boundary bike ride.

Cllr Martyn Bolt, Kirklees Cabinet Member for Transportation and Green Services, said: "It is now possible to cycle between Huddersfield and Bradford virtually fume-free as most of the route follows traffic-free paths and quiet roads.

"This is a huge achievement and shows the value of disused rail corridors. Although they were closed to trains in the 20th century, they are now proving valuable 21st century transport routes for walking and cycling."

The Huddersfield ride will start at St. George's Square outside Huddersfield Railway Station and other participants can pick up the ride at Mirfield Railway Station at about 10.30am or at the 'Rotate' sculpture on the Spen Valley Greenway at Liversedge at approximately 11am.

The route is part of the Greenway network which was recently awarded the first prize in a European Greenway network competition.

The Bradford ride will commence at Centenary Square outside Bradford Town Hall with pick-up points at the ASDA roundabout on the ring road at Bierley at about 10.30am or at the path leading to Victoria Park, Oakenshaw at about 10.50am.

The ride highlights the progress made by Bradford and Kirklees Councils to connect urban centres in West Yorkshire by working with national cycling charity Sustrans. The rides are being supported by the CTC (Cycle Touring Club) and Sustrans.

Children are welcome on the ride if accompanied by a responsible adult. Please bring a waterproof and warm clothing.
