The Workshops

Good Practice is Safe Practice
Every child has a right to stay safe and this workshop will provide examples of how risks in physical education can be managed in order to keep children as safe as possible when undertaking physical education. It will focus on the importance of those involved in planning and delivery of physical education understand and apply the generic principles of safe practice to their own particular circumstances rather than replying on simplistic checklists.

Essentially Dance
This is a practical workshop and delegates should wear appropriate clothing and footwear. The workshop will explore how children can express ideas and emotions through ballroom dancing. The workshop leaders, Darren and Lillia from ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ will use a range of creative sources to inform movement ideas and build movement vocabulary. They will use compositional devices to help participants to create and perform simple dances.

Mathlete Challenge
This is a practical workshop and delegates should wear appropriate clothing and footwear. This workshop will focus on developing the playground or similar space to set-up a Mathlete challenge which not only contributes to raising standards in mathematics but is also a fun competitive physical challenge. There will be an opportunity to see children taking part in these activities throughout the day and then during the workshop the delegates will also be able to gain firsthand experience of the activities. This workshop will help delegates to develop the use of numeracy through physical education.

Raising Aspirations through Physical Education
This workshop will be delivered by practitioners who have used high quality physical education both within and outside the curriculum as a way of raising standards and supporting good personal development and well-being (AM - Early Stage Primary Learning up to 7 years – PM - Middle Stage Primary Learning, 7 to 11 years).

Learning Outside the Classroom
In this workshop the delegates will explore ideas and strategies that have been developed by one Local Authority to give children high quality experiences beyond the classroom as an essential part of learning and personal development. There will be practical examples of how outdoor learning is an intrinsic element of primary learning.
