Journalism Competition, 'Report on Sport'

The Huddersfield Examiner and Dewsbury Reporter  have joined forces with Kirklees Council  to run a journalism competition, 'Report on Sport', in all Kirklees Secondary Schools.

The competition which is open to pupils in years 10, 11 or 12 will be launched from April 7, the first day back after the Easter holidays, and is part of the Kirklees Youth Games, a programme of activities designed to provide opportunities and inspiration for children to participate and progress in sport.

In the past 12 months well over 10,000 school children have taken part in one of the many sports offered by the Kirklees Youth Games and 'Report on Sport' is recognition that there are many other ways to participate in sport other than on the field of play. The competition will give children with writing abilities the chance to experience some first steps in newspaper journalism.

The competition has two stages, each stage requiring the entrants to write a newspaper article about sport in Kirklees. At the end of the first stage, the contribution of all children who participate will be acknowledged with a certificate, whilst there will be silver medals and the chance to attend a journalism workshop for the best entrants, who qualify for the second stage..

There will be two overall winners one in North Kirklees and one in South Kirklees. Each will receive a gold medal and the unique prize of being able to shadow the Dewsbury Reporter's Sports Journalist (North Kirklees winner) and the Examiner's Sports Journalist (South Kirklees winner) for a day at a major sports event.

That major sports event is at the Galpharm Stadium on Sunday 6th July which sees the Kirklees Youth Games Celebration in the style of an Olympic opening ceremony as a curtain raiser to the Huddersfield Giants v Bradford Bulls Super League game..

Councillor Jim Dodds (Children's Services) said 'This is a great competition that sits well with the Youth Games. It shows how good sport is at bringing people together from different backgrounds, with different abilities as well as providing opportunities. I am delighted with the support of the Huddersfield Examiner and Dewsbury Reporter and in particular their provision of the winning prizes, which will give two young people in Kirklees an exciting and unique experience at what should prove to be a wonderful and uplifting event.'
