The Mayor of Kirklees gets ready to start the race

Mayor's Charity Sportive raises more than £5,000

The second Mayor’s Charity Sportive cycle race in Kirklees on Sunday April 27 raised over £5,000 for the West Yorkshire Forget Me Not Trust.

A wet and miserable April morning put off a few riders but 250 competitors finally took part and made the most of the sunshine later in the day.

The Mayor of Kirklees, Cllr Jean Calvert, apologised for the weather and wished the riders well as she started the race at 9am.

The fastest riders – tackling 80 miles with almost 4,000 feet of hill climbs - came in at 4hrs and 43 mins. They were Duncan Mullier (lead rider) and Paul Johnson (second) and Matthew Green (third) at 1.43pm.

Thanks go to all the volunteers who helped on the day including staff from Kirklees Highways and the YMCA. A special thankyou goes to Chris Gaunt who organised volunteer marshals from the West Yorkshire Advanced Motorcycle group, the White Knights (which is a new voluntary motorbike organisation for transporting items between hospitals).

Thanks go to the marshals from the Denby Dale Rotary Club and Nic Wimpenny for organising those from the Pennine Rotary Club.

Feedback from the riders taking part showed that 96% said they thought the event was good or very good – and 99% said they would take part in the event again.
