'Our Sporting Greats' on Tour
A bite-sized version of 'Our Sporting Greats’, an exhibition celebrating the achievements of Kirklees sports men and women, is going on tour.
A portable display, giving a taster of the main exhibition which was put together by Kirklees Museums and Galleries and launched in March, will be touring sports centres and other venues in Kirklees.
The main exhibition, currently showing at Tolson Museum, Huddersfield, features sporting success stories from the period 1950 to around 2000 and includes stories about the likes of swimmers Eileen Fenton and Anita Lonsbrough, footballers Ray Wilson and Trevor Cherry, athlete Derek Ibbotson (pictured), footballer and cricketer Claire Taylor and fencer James Williams
The touring version is an overview of the exhibition and contains photographs of our sporting 'greats'. There will also be an opportunity to see the DVD that accompanies the exhibition. It will be at Dewsbury Library from Tuesday, April 22, until Thursday, June 5, and then at The Stadium, Huddersfield, until the end of July. In August and September, it will be on show at Huddersfield Sports Centre.
'Our Sporting Greats' is on show at Tolson Museum, Wakefield Road, until September. The items featured in the exhibition include the full swimming kit worn by Eileen Fenton when she swam the Channel in 1950, the running spikes Derek Ibbotson wore when he created a new sub-four minute mile record, the jacket fencer James Williams wore in the Olympics and Claire Taylor’s England football and cricket shirts. Also on show is a swimsuit belonging to Anita Lonsbrough and the rugby ball and cap from the first Rugby League Challenge Cup in 1897 at Headingley, Leeds.
