West Yorkshire Sports Partnership Annual Report 2006 / 2007

We are pleased to bring you the 5th annual report of the West Yorkshire Sports Partnership reporting on the 2006 / 2007 financial year.

We now know through Sport England’s Active People survey, that just over 20% of West Yorkshire’s population participate in sport and active recreation to government recommendations (3 x 30 minutes per week), which is just below the national average.  The task is clearly laid out – we need to create opportunities for and encourage 17,000 adults per year in West Yorkshire to increase their participation in sport if we are to reach one of our headline targets.

This year has seen the first year of implementation of the Partnership’s new Strategy and Action Plan which set out to meet this challenge.

The structures of sport continue to be developed: the Board of the Partnership has been widened to include independent contributors who will bring their passion and expertise to the table; the Community Sports Networks are developing strategic plans within their districts; the governing bodies of sport are leading the county-wide sports action groups; and the school sports partnerships are now established structures within the system.

The figures within this report show that these structural changes are taking effect. The highlight of this year is the significant increase in the number of young people who now receive at least 2 hours per week of high quality PE and Sport.  Outside of the school setting more clubs than ever have achieved Clubmark accreditation and we have seen the highest number of people being coached to date by the Community Sports Coaches.

There are challenges ahead over the next year, not least of which are: the need to redirect resources into raising adult participation; the need to lay the foundations for capitalising on the legacy opportunities offered by the 2012 Olympics; and creating joint investment plans that make the best use of all partners’ resources.

That is for the future.  This report is about reflecting on the work of last year to inform the people within the Partnership of the results of their hard work.  To those coaches, development officers, club administrators, teachers, facility managers, be it paid or unpaid, may I take this opportunity to offer you my thanks.  It has, again, been great working with you.
