YORKSHIRE REGIONAL NORWICH UNION SPORTS HALL ATHLETICS FINALS
North Bridge Leisure Centre, Halifax
Four teams representing West Yorkshire traveled the short distance to Halifax on Sunday to compete in the Annual Yorkshire Regional Final for places in the United Kingdom Finals to be held at the National Indoor Arena, Birmingham on 22nd April.
This was the second round of a highly competitive series of events, which is designed to keep young athletes interested in the sport through the long winter months of training.
It was held at the North Bridge Leisure Centre, on Sunday, between all the four Yorkshire Areas – North Yorkshire, South Yorkshire , Humberside and West Yorkshire.
The performances on the day were outstanding with for the fourth year running all four teams winning and qualifying for the UK Finals.
The results were not a certainty this year with Humberside and North Yorkshire getting stronger and the odd relay result (each one amounts to 70 points) either way could have swung the balance.
The UK finals are a massive experience so events will need practice and polish to compete at this level.
In this years competition the Under 13 Girls team beat the nearest rivals North Yorkshire by 75 points.
The U13 girl's team came home with a tally of 23 medals and a clean sweep winning all 4 relay races. They now look forward to the trip to the National Indoor Arena.
In the Girls under 15 Individual All-Rounder competition West Yorkshire members Phillipa Medley was overall Champion with Jo Bullock in second place and Natasha Ashong in 3rd place.
The West Yorkshire Under 15 Girls team came first beating Humberside into second by a margin of 96 points and beating North Yorkshire into third and South Yorkshire into 4th and came home with came home with a haul of 15 medals.
The Under 15 Boys team were also first beating Humberside by 51 points into second and North Yorkshire into third and South Yorkshire into 4th place.
In the Under 15 Individual All-Rounder competition Jason Taylor was joint 2nd with Danny Lyness next counter in 6th Place overall. The Under 15 Boys had a total of 13 medals to take home.
The under 13 Boys team made the clean sweep and every team member out of the 15 Boys came home with at least one medal and beat the Humberside team into 2nd place by a margin of 104 points with North Yorkshire in 3rd place and South Yorkshire in 4th. The Under 13 Boys haul was 28 medals.
