Rothwell 600 Triathlon triumph
In celebration of Rothwell 600 the Leeds South School Sports Partnership was approached to host an event to involve the local school children.
Partnership Development Manager (Mr Brychan Jones) and the Royds School Sports Coordinator (Miss Claire Wharrier) welcomed the idea and opted to organise a triathlon.
A committee was formed with representation from Leeds City Council Sports Development, Rothwell Sports Centre and The British Triathlon Association.
100 Year 5 and 6 pupils from the Rothwell Primary Schools competed in the event along with 40 Year 7 pupils from Royds School. Royds School also provided the Young Leaders to help with the running of the day.
The event was completed in the traditional format of swim, cycle and run using the facilities at Rothwell Sports Centre and the surrounding cricket and ruby pitches.
An accumulation of the Year 5 and 6 times across the three events were combined to determine the winning school with the top 3 girls and boys also been recognised from each year group.
The Royds School pupils competed in the Triathlon as an ‘Inter-House’ event from which points were generated to add to the ‘whole school’ score. Individual athletes also received awards for their achievements.
