Sporting Equal Funding Newsletter – August 2008
Funding information to support sports and physical activity projects for ethnic minorities, refugees and migrant communities.
This newsletter has been put together by Sporting Equals, the only organisation working across the UK to promote opportunities for ethnic minorities in sport. It provides information on national and regional sources of funding relevant for organisations working with ethnic minorities in sport. It is divided into funding available across the UK (or sometimes England) as well as regional and locally targeted funding.
National
Department of Health
The Dept. of Health has published details for the 'Third Sector Investment Programme' which replaces the Department’s long running Section 64 General Scheme. The new programme which will provide grants to Voluntary sector organisations that provide a service similar to that provided by the National Health service or by local authority social services has two funding schemes;
- The Innovation, Excellence and Service Development Fund.
- The Strategic Partner Programme;
The ‘Innovation Excellence and Service Development Fund is 3 year funding scheme that supports projects run by the voluntary sector with a focus on; innovation, excellence and / or service development in the health and social care field with a potential national impact. Projects with a purely local impact will not be considered.
The Strategic Partner Programme on the other hand aims to invest up to £200,000 in initially 5 – 10 strategic partner organisations who will work collaboratively with the Department of Health to advise the Department about key issues in the health and social care field affecting the third sector; and to develop the capability and capacity of the third sector to work with the Department of Health in achieving its strategic objectives.
The total amount available for 2009 – 2010 for new applications will be approximately £7 million. The funding programmes will open for applications on Monday the 21st July 2008. First stage applications must be submitted by Monday the 8th September 2008. From 2010-11 the third sector investment programme will also include a new volunteering investment fund, that builds on the existing Opportunities for Volunteering Scheme.

Funding to Improve the Lives of Young People
Organisations from the public, private or third sector are invited to apply for funding to become a pilot for the Intensive Intervention Project. Intensive Intervention Projects (IIPs) target 1,000 of the most challenging young people every year, using the 'triple track' approach and applying lessons from Family Intervention Projects. The Department for Children, Schools and Families is seeking to support 20 organisations to become a pilot under the Intensive Intervention Projects with £650,000 of funding each for three years. The primary objective of IIPs is to improve outcomes for some of the most vulnerable and challenging young people in society – and to improve outcomes for the communities in which they live. Successful IIP’s are expected to;
- significantly reduce anti-social behaviour; reduce crime; improve participation in education and training;
- tackle substance misuse;
- and reduce homelessness.
Successful bids will need to demonstrate a robust partnership approach to working with this client group, building on the very best and innovative practice available locally and nationally. All organisations wishing to bid should submit an expression of interest by no later than 5.00pm on the 8th August 2008. For those invited to stage two full project proposal forms must be received by no later than 5.00pm on the 19th September 2008.

V funding for young volunteers
V is investing in an expansion in the number of available opportunities – short-term, part-time and full-time – and in a new national framework for volunteering to increase the quality, quantity and diversity of volunteering opportunities for young people. The v Match Fund brings together private sector partners and charities to create innovative volunteering opportunities. The benefits are clear: by harnessing the creativity and energy of young people, they can bring communities together and find solutions to society’s biggest problems. They can change lives, protect the environment, create safer neighbourhoods, improve the nation’s health and give 16-25 year olds skills, confidence and experience. The v Match Fund matches up to 100% of any new investment in youth volunteering – that’s double the money, and double the impact of the investment. Private companies [large and small], charitable trusts / foundations and individuals are seizing the opportunity to build volunteering initiatives with the promise of more bang for their buck. To date, v has pledges of £32m from the private sector – making a total of £64m that has and will be invested into diverse and high impact projects across England. They want to do more. They want to create opportunities so inspiring that volunteering becomes a valued part of the lives of most 16–25 year olds. They want to reach out to some of England’s most disadvantaged and disengaged young people. They want to create real change in communities, tackling the big issues that the nation’s youth tell them they’re concerned about. The next deadline for funding is Friday, 29th August.
