The West Yorkshire Sports Hall Athletics Trials were held at the Richard Dunn Sports Centre on 30th January. Over 120 Boys and Girls from all over West Yorkshire competed to gain selection for the West Yorkshire teams to go to the Yorkshire Regional finals in Halifax on Sunday 21st February.

In the Under 13 Girls competition Caroline Johnson from Crossley Heath High School showed she was in contention by fighting her way through heats , semi final and saving her best time of 25.6sec to win the 2 Lap Final. Amy Pollard from Bingley Grammar School won through the heats and Final in the 4 Lap race in a time of 59.8sec. Hannah Walker from Hipperholme & Lightcliffe showed her all round skills by winning the 6 Lap time trial but also taking top spot in the short fast 1 Lap time trial and the Speed Bounce competition with 81 bounces. Rebekah Tiler from Cullingworth was jumping for joy as she won the Standing Long Jump with 2.11m and hoping to repeat last years gold medal at the UK Finals took the top spot in the Vertical Jump with 60cm. The record breaking performance came from Beth Thomas (Cockburn College) who broke the U13 Girls Shot Put record with a put of 9.97m.
In the Under 13 Boys Abishaia Blair (Leeds) set a new 2 Lap record breaking the record of 23.5sec set in 2009 by Gypsy Black who went on to win the UK gold medal as well as winning the Standing Long Jump in 2.40m. The Aviva Athlete of the match awards goes to Issa Muvunyi of Grange Technology College and to Beth Thomas of Cockburn College.
The teams to represent West Yorkshire in the Regional final in Halifax on 21st February have been selected on an all round basis and letters are on their way. In the regional competition each athlete has to compete in 3 categories of events so this means that some athletes who might have won individual events at the trials have not shown the all round ability to fill the team places, so may be disappointed.
The athletes taking part were from all areas of West Yorkshire, including Bradford, Leeds, Huddersfield, Halifax and Wakefield.
The number of athletes taking part were slightly down on last year but there is room for more taking part in Athletics at Club Level and School level in the West Yorkshire area.
If there are any 12, 13, 14, 15 year olds available to take part in athletics events, whether this is Sportshall Athletics, Track & Field, Cross Country or Fell racing that would like to try athletics, then give us a call and we can point you to the nearest club.
Training with an Athletics Club does include the training and conditioning to improve for competitions, which can be local or County, North of England or National. Athletics does have something for everyone, whether it is long distance, Short Sprints, Jumps, Throws, or a combination. It caters for all ages from around 8 and for all abilities who aim to improve their own personal best performance.
