"I decided to saddle up for the Bike week challenge and quite enjoyed the experience of a few 13 mile round trip commutes.

"I will try and give the jag a rest once a week and cycle in from now on - headwinds and Yorkshire rain notwithstanding.

And I also learned that steps and stellas don't mix.

West Yorkshire Bike Week challenge success

During bike week 51 rides accepted the challenge from West Yorkshire Sport and rode 944 miles for their county.

The challenge was part of a week of two-wheeled activity across the country organised by Everyday Cycling. Overall, 42,000 cycling miles were racked up by on the website's Activity Log.

Over 2000 registered users contributed to the massive mileage total, the equivalent of cycling almost twice around the equator, riding forty-seven End-to-Ends, or riding a quarter of the distance to the moon!

In the process, Everyday Cycling users who clicked the 'trip' button on the site's activity log indicated that they had saved 972 car journeys during Bike Week, on school runs, commutes and trips to the shops.

Nigel Harrsion, Director of West Yorkshire Sport - the organisation based in Kirklees tasked with coordinating sport across the region - was pleased with the result. "I would like to extend a big THANK YOU to everyone who got out there and rode for their county," he said. "We live in such a beautiful county, cycling is the perfect way to appreciate it.

"Cycling is one of the best sports to get into as it is fun, keeps you fit and works just as well whether you cycle as a family or on your own. Even Julian, our sedentary communication officer, got on his bike and cycled into work last week.

"So a huge thanks to everyone for helping us clock up so many miles and taking so many cars off the road. But just because Bike Week is over, it doesn't mean you have to stop. Keep clocking up those miles!"
