Working with the third sector to create sporting opportunities
2nd July 2009
Beach volleyball came to the streets of London last week – with the help of a national charity and the Sport England Small Grants Programme.
Action For Kids, a charity which helps young people with physical and learning disabilities, organised a beach volleyball tournament aimed at giving city workers the chance to give the sport a try, while raising money for a worthwhile cause.
The charity applied to our new Small Grants Programme and secured £9,500 of National Lottery funding to open up the event to the local community. Local school children enjoyed the opportunity to play beach volleyball and learn skills from experienced coaches and members of the Great Britain Beach Volleyball Team, including Gregg Weaver and Steve Grotowski.
Gregg said: “I know I’m biased, but to my mind beach volleyball is one of the most enjoyable sports to be involved in and is, of course, a great way to stay fit and have fun in the process. Action For Kids organised a fantastic venue to showcase the sport.”
Carolyn Mwaniki, Action For Kids’ Fundraising Events Manager, said:
“With London 2012 just around the corner, the tournament was a great chance to try out the sport and have a bit of fun while raising funds for a good cause.”
