Yorkshire Regional Sportshall Athletics Finals report

Following the successful Trials held at Richard Dunn Sports centre on 12th December the two West Yorkshire Under 11 Girls and two West Yorkshire Under 11 Boys teams travelled to the English Institute of Sport for the Yorkshire & Humberside Finals.

The match at Sheffield featured the West Yorkshire Tykes, West Yorkshire Terriers, Hull and East Riding and South Humberside teams all keen and raring to go. Both the Boys and Girls teams soon found that it would be no push over and had to pull out all the stops if they were to finish as champions. Passing through the events it looked very close with all teams picking up wins on the track and on the field events.

In the end the West Yorkshire Tykes Girls team finished in 1st place with 480 points and the West Yorkshire Terriers team were 2nd with 437 points just 1 point in front of Hull & East Riding with South Humberside in 4th place with 395 points. In the individual events Rebekah Tiler  was 1st in the Vertical Jump, Hannah Brierley was first in Chest Push and Rebecca Godfrey was first in the Standing Long Jump. Ambah Thompson was 1st in the Balance Test and in the Standing Triple Jump and Hannah Stead was 1st in the Soft Javelin. The rest of the team did very well in their individual events which are scored together with their team mates for the team positions. In the relays the Girls Tykes were victorious in the 4x1 Relay, the Paarlauf Relay, the Grand Prix and Hurdle Relay.

The West Yorkshire Girls Terriers Team in finishing 2nd place won the Obstacle Relay and scored 1st place with the 3 girls excelling in the Speed Bounce. Individually Lucy Byram was 1st= in the Balance Test and Charlotte Hankin was 1st in the Speed Bounce.

 

The West Yorkshire Tykes Boys team overall winners with a score of 469 with wins on the Obstacle Relay, 1+1, 4x1, Over Under, Grand Prix and the Hurdle Relay with just 2 points dropped in the Paarlauf relay. Individuals topping the rankings were Tobi Adeniji in the Triple Jump, Lewis Pickering in the Speed Bounce and Ben Jarvis in the Balance Test.

The West Yorkshire Boys Terriers were just pipped into 3rd place with a score of 431 just 3 points behind Hull& East Riding who were in 2nd place, with South Humberside in 4th place with 394 points. The Terriers finished in 2nd place to the Tykes in most of the relays but finished top overall in the Vertical jump. Individually Liam Colgan was top ranked in Soft Javelin. The rest of the team did very well in their individual events which are scored together with their team mates for the team positions.

The day was an excellent experience for the youngsters with all teams and competitors being cheered on in an excellent facility that caters for excellence in all sports. In the main hall next door the North of England indoor Championships for U20 & Seniors was taking place with World Heptathlon Champion Jessica Ennis taking part in the High Jump competition. It should not be too log before some of these athletes are using the facilities in the top talent coaching squads and indoor athletics competitions.

Many of todays competitors who were 11 after the qualifying date of 31st August 2009 can compete in the Under 13/Under 15 Trials at Richard Dunn Sports Centre on Saturday 30th January.
