Youth Games 2009 Report

Record Success for West Yorkshire Youngsters at Youth Games

Young athletes from across the county jumped, twirled, kicked and kurled their way to success at the 11th annual West Yorkshire Youth Games. The next generation of the county's athletes from 76 schools gathered at Leeds Metropolitan University’s Carnegie campus in one of the most exciting fixtures in the county’s sporting calendar.

Over 850 youngsters representing the region’s five local authorities competed across nine sports: tennis, cricket, gymnastics, cheerleading, athletics, badminton, high-five netball, boccia and new age kurling.

The biggest games to date got off to an active start with a grand opening ceremony and a mass warm-up led by Errol Barrows – a senior physical development officer from Kirklees.

The games were opened by Leeds gymnasts Ashley Watson & Matthew Firth, both are in the British Gymnastics elite talent programme and expected to compete for their country in 2012.  Ashley and Matthew were on hand throughout the morning to share their experiences and advice with the youngsters.

What followed was a full day of sporting competition, across 10 sporting disciplines.

The Fair Play category in the sports showed all the teams were playing the game with the right attitude and both competitors and spectators enjoyed the opportunity to enjoy a great day's sport.

Nigel Harrison, Director of West Yorkshire Sport said: "Every year the Youth games get bigger and better, and the opening ceremony is a great way to get everyone into the spirit of the games.  The level of competition this year was as high as ever and the standard of play was outstanding.

West Yorkshire boasts some great up and coming young sportspeople and, who knows how far these children will take their talents”

Nigel continued “This event has been a great opportunity for youngsters to taste the exciting atmosphere of a large competition, and for some this will have been their first chance to represent their District. The ethos of the Games is to make sport and competition fun and accessible to as many people as possible and this year's event has undoubtedly done that. I look forward cheering many of them on to greater successes in the future.”
