Active People

About The Survey

Now in its second generation - The Active People Survey was commissioned by Sport England, the leading sports development agency in England. Ipsos MORI, a large market research company, was awarded the contract to carry out the survey following competitive tendering.

The primary objective of the Active People Survey is to measure levels of participation in sport and active recreation and its contribution to improving the health of the nation.

Sport and active recreation includes walking and cycling for recreation in addition to more traditional formal and informal sports. When measuring sports participation we are concerned with not only the type of activity but also the frequency, intensity and duration. Measuring these aspects will enable us to identify how many people are active at levels that are beneficial for their health.

In addition a range of other important sport related measures are included such as club membership, involvement in competition, receiving tuition or coaching and contributing to sport through voluntary activity. The survey will also provide wide ranging demographic information to enable the identification of participation by different social groups.

Active People 2 results, December 08

The latest national active people survey, completed in October 2008 and published in December 2008, shows a very significant increase in the percentage of adults in Leeds undertaking at least three, 30 minute sessions a week, of moderate intensity physical activity.

Yorkshire was the most improved Sport England region for ‘participation’, led by the West Yorkshire County Sports Partnership who topped the table for getting people back into sport with an increase of 4.9% in just two years.

Leeds now have the highest participation rate in the region with a massive 7.4% increase in participation rates.

In the National Indicator used by the Government to set priorities and measure local councils, Leeds rose from 218th out of England’s 354 local authorities to a fantastic 16th place.

Leeds saw an increase from 20.6% to 28.4% on a participation measure which increases the range of moderate activities for people over 65.

This result means that Sport Leeds and its partners have already exceeded the target, set in the Taking the Lead sport and active recreation strategy for Leeds 2006 to 2012, to increase participation by 1% a year.
