In groundbreaking example of cross-boundary cooperation, the five districts of West Yorkshire have signed up for Change4life and are joining forces to bring you swim4Free - a scheme where 16s and under & 60s and over can enjoy free public swim sessions.

How do I swim4Free?

If you fall into either age range, you can swim in any of the county's 50 council pools, all you need to do is sign up for a leisure card at the pool where you swim. These cards are usually valid for a year and are either free or cost no more than £2.

Most facilities will accept valid leisure cards from any of the 5 districts.

Background

swim4free is part of the new Government initiative offering free swimming for 16 and under and 60s and overs and began on 1st April 2009. To celebrate the 5 districts staged a launch event at Dewsbury Sports Centre. Guest: Cross Channel Swimmer Eileen Fenton

Dewsbury school-children jumped into a specially dyed pink swimming pool to mark the launch of the West Yorkshire wide “swim4free” project.

Eileen Fenton started the countdown to the launch of the project which all five local authorities in West Yorkshire have signed up to. It offers free public swimming sessions in around 50 pools for young people aged 16 and under and older people aged 60 and over from 1 April 2009. This means that across West Yorkshire over 420,000 young people and more than 315,000 older people will be able to swim regularly for free at a pool near where they live.
