Youth Games 2008

The countdown to the 2008 Youth Games has begun. On June 28th at Leeds Metropolitian University over 600 young talented athletes will represent their Local Authoirty across eight sports.

The sports this year include tennis, cricket, rugby league, gymnastics, badminton, high-five netball, boccia and new age kurling.

Youngsters from across the County have been competing in local schools and then district wide competitions over the past acedmic year. The winners of these district compeitions then represent their area at the event in June.

This years West Yorkshire Youth Games on Saturday 28th June at Leeds Metropolitan University - Headingley Campus.

Facts and Figures regarding the day -

There will be over 600 young athletes between the ages of 4 and 16yrs taking part in the day.

Over 200 officals and volunteers will be present.

Over 400 spectators.

30-40 VIPs in attendance.

Registration on the Day

All participants will register at their DISTRICT location - there will be a sign with the local authority name on it, participants will meet here in order to register with their team manager / teams.

This year the event will commence with an opening ceremony. - all participants (and team managers need to arrive for (at the latest) 9.15am in order to line up for the Olympic style ceremony. District registration points will be allocated on the astroturf.

At the sports location after the ceremony Team managers will be there to welcome them and register participants as a team to the sports organiser.

The opening ceremony will start at 9.30am prompt and involve the opening of the ceremony by a VIP and a aerobic on-mass warm up. The ceremony will close at 10am.

Step into Sport Students

I would like to congratulate you on being part of the Step into Sport programme and I hope you have learnt new things and had fun along the way.

Due to your eagerness to become a leader and volunteer I would like to invite you to be part of the West Yorkshire Youth Games on June 28th June at Leeds Metropolitian University. This is the county’s largest multi-sport event and involves over 600 participants aged from 5-16years.

We urgently need good volunteers such as you to help run the event. This year the sports involved are – rugby league, cricket, tennis, netball, badminton, gymnastics, boccia and new age kurling. The tasks we need volunteers to help with are scoring, assisting with officering, table officials, assisting with team management and general event management.

You can count your time at the Youth Games as ‘hours’ for your Step into Sport or CSLA qualifications. You will also receive a certificate and t-shirt on the day as well as packed lunch.

Venue – Leeds Metropolitan University Headlingley Campus

Time – 7.30 until 5pm (at the very latest)
